Golf Channel president and UA alumnus Mike McCarley shares his advice on the importance of asking questions in order to see the bigger picture of your organization:
If you know how what you do every day when you come to work really connects to help the people around you and helps them succeed, and then how does that help your company succeed, and then how does that help achieve a certain vision that your company has, you’re a great employee. But that’s hard. That’s really hard to understand how some of the really mundane things that you do every day connect to the success of the overall company.
I encourage our employees to ask questions. Why did we do something a certain way? Why did we make this decision; I don’t understand this. Because the more you understand those decisions and how certain things connect to the ultimate goals of the company, the better you’re going to be at your job, and the more opportunity you’re going to have in your career.
Because you need to be able to see the big picture, you need to be able to see the entire field. And we’ve got a group of about 1,000 employees who work at Golf Channel now, and if all of them could have a little bit broader view of our business and understand our business and how what they do every day really matters to help the company win, then the entire company is going to be a heck of a lot better.
